Air quality deserves special attention

Birds have an efficient respiratory system that also makes airborne irritants important. Keep smoke, aerosols, strong fragrances, solvent fumes and heavy cleaning vapors away from the bird’s living space. Good ventilation matters, but avoid placing the cage in a constant cold draft.

One widely recognized household danger is overheated nonstick cookware and other products that can release fumes when damaged or heated excessively. A bird should never share air with an active cooking incident, smoke event or unknown chemical vapor. If a bird shows breathing difficulty, weakness or sudden distress, treat it as an emergency.

Sleep is part of behavior care

Many companion parrots do best with a consistent period of quiet darkness each night. A television that runs late, people walking past the cage and changing household schedules can repeatedly interrupt rest even when the bird appears to be perched calmly.

Choose a sleep routine the household can maintain. Some birds sleep in the main enclosure with the room darkened; others use a separate sleep cage in a quiet area. The important part is predictable rest, safe ventilation and a setup that does not create overheating or panic.

The cage should be a base, not the whole world

A cage needs appropriate bar spacing, safe perches of varied diameters, room to move and enrichment that encourages chewing, climbing and foraging. Avoid filling every inch with toys. Birds need usable flight or movement space and clear routes between food, water and resting areas.

Rotate enrichment gradually and inspect hardware, bells, fibers and fasteners for wear. A toy that was safe when new can become hazardous after weeks of chewing. Food and water dishes should be positioned to reduce contamination from droppings.

Learn the bird’s quiet warning signs

Birds often conceal illness. Changes in appetite, droppings, voice, breathing, posture, activity, weight or time spent fluffed up can be more important than dramatic symptoms. A small gram scale and routine weights can help detect trends that feathers hide.

An avian-experienced veterinarian can help establish species-specific diet, preventive care and environmental needs. Home observation works best when it is used to notice change early, not to postpone professional care.
